I'm doing a giveaway of three copies of N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, here. It's hands-down the best book I've read in at least the last year.

The only limitation is on whether The Book Depository ships to your country. I'm doing the draw in a couple of days. Feel free to point all your friends toward the post to enter.

I do them a lot, when (for whatever reason) I haven't paid for the book [in a way that would benefit the author, e.g. second hand] and I really loved it. I did pay for my copy of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, which makes it surprising I'm actually giving it away and so often, but heh, s'worth it.

For me, it's a bit of both. Giveaways of books are great publicity, too.
