I'm doing a giveaway of three copies of N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, here. It's hands-down the best book I've read in at least the last year.

The only limitation is on whether The Book Depository ships to your country. I'm doing the draw in a couple of days. Feel free to point all your friends toward the post to enter.

This is a special occasion. I wish that wasn't the case. I would absolutely do a giveaway of Silver Phoenix just because I love it.

But the Powers That Be have decided that no, we can't have an awesome cover with our awesome heroine who is visibly a POC.
The book is being re-packaged. Observe:

This is the original cover:

These are the new covers (Silver Phoenix and the sequel):

(Yeah, idk about the sequined tank top either.)

I was first made aware of this through [personal profile] effex' linkspam.
[personal profile] inkstone has two excellent posts about it, and so does [personal profile] bookshop, they can tell you everything you might want to know about the book and about this travesty.
The book is wonderful. There's a great heroine, and cruel cruel descriptions of food (seriously, you'll be hungry the entire time you're reading this book), and awesome monsters, and hot guys (if you're into that), and so much more. <333333

In the end I think you should buy this book and all its sequels anyway, even with the new covers, because if Cindy Pon (who is one of the most gracious people you will ever meet) becomes successful enough, her name will carry the covers she, her characters, and we deserve.

Now here's what I'm going to do right now.

I'm giving away 5 copies of the original hardcover on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you can, please buy the book.
If you don't have the money and would like a copy, comment on this entry with SILVER PHOENIX in the subject line.
This is an international giveaway.

Once the 5 copies are gone, they're gone.

ALL COPIES ARE GONE.
Thank you for stopping by. :)

.... that I created an RSS feed for LiveJournal shortly after creating the community: [livejournal.com profile] stl_feed

So if any LJers reading this want to add us to their flists (a mirror community wouldn't be feasible for obvious reasons), go right ahead.
I've already added the link to the "Useful Information" category on the profile and in the linklist. :)

Our first giveaway has ended and the winner should have her copy of The Iron King in a few days. Again, congratulations! :D

I'm planning a new giveaway soon, but I'm open to suggestions should anyone have any. (See also: how to make my TBR pile grow.)
I'm currently without an internet connection at home, so I'll be online only sporadically. I do however have access to my email accounts 24/7, which means any and all comments here will reach me.

Meanwhile! I was wondering whether you guys would like linkspam type posts every now and then to offsite giveaways.

First of all: commenting is open to everyone, anonymous or not.
If a giveaway is hosted here there are a couple of things you might like to know:

Dreamwidth Users:

This should be fairly straightforward. If you have a DW account and comment on an entry here, I (or your giveaway host du jour) will have a way to contact you, either through your account email or via a comment on your DW.

OpenID Users

What's OpenID, you ask? Well, it's a distributed identity system, meaning you can use one login across many websites. Chances are pretty good that you already have an OpenID, for example through your LiveJournal account [username.livejournal.com would then be your OpenID], or Flickr, or Google, or Yahoo, etc. pp. This site should be quite helpful in that regard.
Dreamwidth lets you set up an OpenID, which is awesome because a) you can upload up to six icons b) you're more easily identifiable without having to resort to IP addresses, and c) you have some control over your comments, such as deleting them.
I encourage you to use your LJ account should you have one.

Anonymous Commenters

If you are none of the above or don't want to bother (trust me, I understand), then providing an email address or another easy and reasonably secure way to contact you is - well not crucially important, but close.
IP tracking is on, so I know who you are, but unless you check back manually you won't know that I've answered your comment and I don't have any other way to contact you.

And finally ....

If you would like to have a Dreamwidth account, tell me and I will send you an invite (preferably to your valid email address). :)

The Book

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

From the website:

Meghan Chase is about to discover who's been keeping watch. When her little brother is kidnapped, Meghan must enter a world where anything she touches may kill her—including the icy prince who stirs her wakening senses. As she steps into the Nevernever, finding her brother is only the start of her problems. For the trail leads Meghan toward the most dangerous threat of all, the mysterious Iron Fey....
This book has done what many others have not managed to do: it dragged me out of my recent reading lethargy, and how. (And the official summary doesn't even hint at my favourite character.)
Now, I love magical adventures with female protagonists. Throw in a couple of cruel and/or seemingly inhuman fey folk, a little intrigue, vivid imagery and a dashing love interest (or two, or three), and I'm almost bound to read it.
While reading I did have a few quibbles. If you've seen/read Labyrinth or The Neverending Story, or American Gods for that matter, elements of the story will seem very familiar to you.
There were some tropes. I had to wait quite awhile for some negative things to be subverted (but they were! This is the first book in a trilogy, I should have trusted the author a bit more ...).
I don't want to give too much away, but I believe the next few titles in the series hint at more of that. (The Iron Daughter and The Iron Queen)

But: I loved it a lot. I might have complained for an hour or so when I discovered that the next book wouldn't be out until August. And I really want more people to read it. ♥

The author happens to have a LiveJournal (with a fannish name, which gives her an automatic +20 in Awesome in my book): [livejournal.com profile] sylverkit; and a Twitter account: JKagawa
If you haven't read the first book yet, I suggest treading carefully, since there are a few potential spoilers. You can also read the first three chapters online for free.

How to Get a Copy

I'm giving away a brandnew copy of The Iron King. In fact, I'll order it via The Book Depository and have them send it to your address, wherever you may live. Yes, it's an international giveaway. [Although if you live in Berlin, Germany I would be very much inclined to take you out for a cup of coffee to give you the book in person ;)]

To enter, just comment on this entry with The Iron King in the subject line. (You can comment even if you don't wish to enter, but please don't post any spoilers.)
The deadline is June 1st*.

After that, I'll do a drawing, announce the winner and contact you for the details. Good luck! :D

*June 1st is the date Winter's Passage is released, a free ebook novella set between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter. You will be able to find it here.

Hi everybody!

This is just a short post to essentially get things started around here. Naming-the-comm credit goes to the ever brilliant [personal profile] effex! :D

To copy-pasta the profile:

The title of the comm and the community description pretty much say it all, but:

If you read, or watched, or listened to something that you loved and if you want others to share in that love, this is the community for you. Simply put: if you are planning on doing or doing a giveaway, you should pimp it here!

Rules:

1) This will be an open community, but it should still be a positive and safe place. If anyone is found to be disrupting that, prepare to face consequences.

2) These rules are subject to revision. If I do so, I'll tell you and post the old and new rules for comparison. If you have comments or changes to propose, please do so!

3) You can host your giveaways on your own DW, or LJ, or website, or you can host them here.

4) Including your reasons for doing the giveaway, a link (if applicable), your deadline and any conditions that might apply (such as whether you'll ship internationally or only to certain countries) in your giveaway post would be great. :)

5) Contests are cool too, as long as there's a prize of some sort and you're doing it to share the love. ♥

6) Keep the tags simple, but useful: giveaway, books, contest - you get the idea.

7) Please keep the giveaways fair and honest. Failing to fulfill your commitment or using sockpuppet accounts will lead to a warning - at the very least.

We are all about that - sharing the love. I will post the very first giveaway sometime this weekend when I'm a little less busy, and I'm hoping for lots of participants! :D
